JDSC students are trained to become effective leaders who can make a difference in their own life, family, and community.

To develop leadership and service, Deweyans apply what they learned in the different subject disciplines to their project of interest. Teens work with peers and teachers to design, plan, and implement sustainability projects that are beneficial to the community and the greater society.

With sustainable education and PBL, high school students learn more about the current global issues and hone their research and 21st century skills. Likewise through sustainability projects, they understand the role children and youth play in protecting the natural environment and combating climate change and social inequities.

Because students work in small groups mentored by a competent and caring teacher, learning is personalized for each of them. They are empowered by sharing their strengths in project work and are supported when confronted by challenges.

It is common for JDSC students to be out of their classrooms investigating a project topic with select children from other grade levels. They go out on field visits multiple times during the school year or use online technology to learn and collaborate with others, including experts in different fields. Resource speakers are invited to  share their learning and expertise with the school community.

At John Dewey, students believe in their power to change the world for the better. Deweyans not only dream bigger, they make sure they act on it and make it a reality.
