History

John Dewey School for Children (JDSC) was established in 2003 by passionate educators, Rochelle Razo and Marita Marcelo. The school was born out of the desire to provide a nurturing, child-friendly environment to enable students to develop love for learning and to excel not only in academics but more importantly to use the knowledge, skills, and values gained to contribute to life outside school. Prior to its birth, the founding members who then were running a tutorial center, discussed how students became more and more disengaged from learning as they progressed through the academic ladder. The founders knew that something had to be done to improve education. It is in addressing this need that JDSC was conceptualized.

In 2003, the John Dewey School for Children opened its doors to its first students. The school’s first location was at the corner of Congressional Avenue and Mindanao Avenue, Project 8, Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City. Initially, the school offered only pre-school classes for two- to five-year old pupils. John Dewey’s philosophy of “learning by doing” was deemed a perfect fit to what a 21st-century school should be.

With almost two decades of rich experience in developing students’ problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, social, and emotional skills through progressive and innovative ways of teaching, JDSC now offers progressive education to preschool, grade school, and junior high school.

JDSC is proud to pioneer in the Philippines the following programs: project-based learning, sustainability education, the Virtues Project, and global digital citizenship. The school embraces sustainability as a community practice and is a staunch advocate for the environment.
